These creatures were the first bearings of Lucien's research into the vampiric powers and abilities. He found that he could create these "offspring" at the cost of some of his power. This cost, however, was greater than he liked so he pushed his experimentation further to find out that he could create a stronger and more resilient version if he used a human as a base. With this knowledge, Lucien sent his minions to abduct people from the nearby towns, making sure not to draw too much attention, because every casualty would greatly set back his plan for revenge.
