Worlo - The Walrus

The worlo is a large creature inhabiting the cold waters of the oceans, always remaining close to land or an ice shelf, where hundreds gather and live in packs. These creatures can be expensive companions, requiring great amounts of mollusks, and crustaceans daily because they store a significant amount of fat to survive the freezing temperatures. However, they are greatly valued companions by the tribes that live in the Frost Lands, riding them into battle against their enemies of the sea. The worlos are also hunted because of their tusks, which are sought after by merchants and nobility.

The inhabitants of the northernmost corners of the Frost Lands follow huddles of worlo during the summer season because of the creatures' capacity for predicting which ice shelves shall break apart or which ones will remain, allowing the people to set up unique fishing outposts in areas that will be flooded with the season's fish and other creatures. Scholars believe that the worlo drill their tusks in the ice and can tell whether the shelf will hold or if it will break apart and drift into the open waters; an excellent survival skill in such a hostile environment.
