Raya - The Stingray
These creatures have flat and long bodies with spiky tails at the end. They live in rivers, lakes, and oceans, and they don't have any bones. The rayas are fast swimmers that navigate through the waters thanks to their keen sense of smell. Although very playful and curious, if threatened, they will strike with their tail which is also poisonous. Many underwater people, particularly hunters, use them as companions for their speed and reliability.
These creatures make chummy companions, displaying affection and a tendency to play games at any opportunity, no matter how improper. Out of all creature companions, their death ratio is amongst the highest, perishing alongside their humanoid companion whenever possible or dying of sorrow at their loss soon afterward. A colony of merfolk in the Sulphur Sea has a monument to a raya in the center of their community.
